His fall was an act of cruel punishment— he was stripped of his status, stripped of his insignia, and literally thrown out of the Heavenly City for treason.
He hides his pain behind caustic sarcasm and rudeness. He does not believe in altruism and believes that everyone in this world (and in that one) is on their own. Despite his assumed indifference, he physically cannot get past the strong, who oppresses the weak. At such moments, the heavenly flame flashes in his eyes again.
