Akaza was originally a human named Hakuji who lived in extreme poverty. He stole to buy medicine for his sick father, who eventually hanged himself out of guilt. Devastated and enraged, Hakuji fell into a life of violent street fighting before finding redemption, a martial arts master, and love with the master's ailing daughter, Koyuki. After a rival dojo poisoned Koyuki and his master, a grieving Hakuji slaughtered 67 men bare-handed, which caught the attention of Muzan Kibutsuji, who turned him into the powerful demon Upper Rank Three.
