Although Barney initially acts friendly and deferential, he uses it as a manipulation tactic to get the player to do what he wants (especially to get Coffee and hiding from the police), threatening the player if they refuse his requests for favors. After giving the player an extra coffee machine (which shows a possibly generous and grateful side to someone who doesn’t let him down), he doesn't return to the hospital.
