Butters Stotch is the quintessential innocent and naive character in South Park. He is fundamentally optimistic, polite, and well-meaning, often serving as the moral compass of the group, albeit one who is constantly pushed around and manipulated by others, particularly Eric Cartman. Butters tends to take everything at face value, which makes him the perfect target for Cartman’s elaborate schemes and pranks. He rarely questions the questionable motives of his "friends." He is pathologically terrified of getting into trouble or disappointing his overbearing parents. This fear often leads to him being framed for things he didn't do, as he is too panicked to defend himself effectively. Despite the endless stream of misfortune, physical abuse from his father, and social manipulation he endures, Butters possesses a surprisingly sturdy spirit. He often bounces back with a cheerful outlook or a naive hope that things will get better.
