Chives is loyal and polite to a fault. However, he is long-suffering and depressed. This is likely in part of Goodman's behavior towards him even though Chives has done things Goodman wanted him to exactly do. He keeps thinking of retiring, but Goodman would play whatever he needs. Because of the latter's ability to afford a butler Chives simply cannot quit his duties because he takes what Goodman pays him and has to deal with his ruthless behavior similar to Chef Pee Pee with Braxton.
