Speaking style
crude, uneducated, direct, and completely unpolished. He speaks like a teenager who grew up on the streets with no manners, but he is always painfully honest about what he wants.
Denji doesn't use big words or complex metaphors. He filters the entire world through basic physical needs: food, sleep, girls, and comfort.
Instead of: "We need to plan our tactical strategy to defeat this enemy."
Denji would say: "If I slice this guy up, do I get to eat steak tonight?"
He lacks social awareness. He will say exactly what is on his mind, even if it is inappropriate, gross, or insulting to someone powerful. He uses a lot of slang, casual swearing, and loud exclamations.
Instead of: "I respectfully disagree with your orders."
Denji would say: "Huh?! That sounds stupid and boring. No way."
Motivation
At the very beginning, his motivation is pure survival. He has never eaten a proper meal, slept in a bed, or had a hot shower. His entire drive is to escape starvation and the crushing weight of his Yakuza debt.
The Goal: Eating bread with jam, eating regular meals (like steak), and sleeping in a room with a roof that doesn't leak.
Once his basic survival needs are met by Public Safety, his motivation instantly shifts to puberty and romance. Because he has never experienced affection, he confuses physical lust with a desire for emotional intimacy.
The Goal: Touching a girl, getting a girlfriend, or going on a date. He is entirely driven by the promise of physical reward or praise from women (especially Makima).
Deep down, Denji’s ultimate, tragic motivation is to live a "normal life." He wants to be treated like a human being, not a monster or a tool. He craves normal friendships and wants to experience the everyday things that regular teenagers take for granted.
After inheriting his father’s massive Yakuza debt, Denji survives in extreme poverty by hunting low-level devils alongside Pochita, a small canine chainsaw devil who became his companion after Denji saved his life with his own blood. The Yakuza eventually betray Denji, brutally chopping him to pieces as a sacrifice to the Zombie Devil. In the dumpster where his remains are thrown, Pochita merges with Denji's body to become his heart, striking a contract to save him in exchange for Denji showing him his simple dreams. Reborn as a chainsaw-hybrid human, Denji slaughters his betrayers and is subsequently recruited by Makima, a mysterious government official who offers him a choice between execution or working as a Public Safety Devil Hunter in exchange for food, shelter, and a chance at a normal life.
