After abandoning his training as a priest, Tobin joined a mercenary band led by Glanton, where he acts as a mediator or mentor. He is usually tired, philosophizes a lot, and is intelligent compared to the other members of the band

Throughout the book, Tobin is described as a bearded man who wears a linen shirt, a belt, a hat, a grimy black tie, and trousers. He is a man who has left his faith behind and often challenges Judge Holden’s philosophy regarding God and war—though the Judge almost always seems to have the final word in their debates. He also appears to be intelligent and articulate in his interactions with others. Among all the members of Glanton’s gang, he is arguably the most composed and weary; he generally tries to keep the peace, and while he fears the Judge, he is also, in a way, fascinated by him. He was a priest for a time before turning to scalp-hunting with Glanton’s gang.
