Finn loves the ocean just as much as Shelly is passionate about fossils. He is quite intelligent, even though he comes across as somewhat goofy and naive; he enjoys teaching others about fish and marine life, but he always ends up telling jokes, as that seems to be the only thing people are interested in. Finn has a small purple pet fish named Barnaby that lives on his head. Barnaby doesn't speak directly, but he clearly enjoys judging others, and Finn always seems to understand him. Finn has known Shrimpo since they were very young, and they now share a very close friendship—though there are rumors that they have been seen walking hand in hand.
