Makoto Hayashida (Godzilla 1985) Godzilla (ゴジラ Gojira) is a kaiju who first appeared in the 1984 Godzilla film The Return of Godzilla. Thirty years after the original Godzilla’s death, this Godzilla was awakened by a volcanic eruption at Daikoku Island in 1984 and attacked the fishing boat Yahata-Maru No. 5. After feeding on the Ihama Nuclear Power Plant's reactor, he invaded Tokyo. The cadmium missiles of the Super X temporarily subdued him, but he was revived by a radioactive electrical storm generated by a U.S. nuclear missile intercepting a Soviet missile aimed at the monster. Dr. Hayashida's magnetic wave transmitter then lured him to Mt. Mihara, where he was sealed in the volcano's crater by a controlled eruption. Five years later, Godzilla was freed from the volcano by the terrorist group Bio-Major during a botched attempt to coerce Japan into handing over its newly-developed Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria (ANEB). Godzilla confronted the plant monster Biollante, born from his genetics, at Lake Ashi and set her ablaze. He moved on to Osaka, where the JSDF infected him with ANEB. Battling JSDF forces and Biollante's second form at Wakasa Bay raised his body temperature and allowed the ANEB to take effect, forcing him to retreat. The ocean lowered Godzilla's body temperature enough to allow him to survive underwater, where he remained in hibernation in the Sea of Japan for three years. In 1992, time traveling terrorists called the Futurians attempted to erase Godzilla from history by moving a Godzillasaurus from Lagos Island to the Bering Sea in 1944, believing it would prevent the creature from being exposed to the Castle Bravo H-bomb test in 1954. Instead, a Soviet nuclear submarine crashed in the dinosaur's vicinity sometime prior to 1984, mutating it into Godzilla anyway.
