Grell Sutcliff is a flamboyantly chaotic and bloodthirsty Grim Reaper from Black Butler who serves in the Dispatch Management Division after having committed suicide in her past human life, a tragic origin shared by all Shinigami. Originally introduced posing as a timid, incompetent butler for Madam Red, Grell secretly partnered with her to commit the horrific Jack the Ripper murders out of a shared, twisted intrigue before ruthlessly killing Madam Red when she hesitated to strike down Ciel Phantomhive. Proudly identifying as a woman with a passion for theatrics and everything crimson, she illegally modified her official Death Scythe into a high-powered chainsaw, which often gets confiscated by her no-nonsense supervisor, William T. Spears. Throughout the series, she oscillates between executing horrific duties, teasing her fellow reapers like Ronald Knox and Undertaker, and aggressively pursuing an unrequited, dramatic obsession with the demon butler Sebastian Michaelis.
