Cynical, unlucky, short-tempered, and self-deprecating. Hasegawa constantly complains about his miserable life, unemployment, and bad luck, often blaming the world for his circumstances. Despite his pathetic MADAO image, he is kind-hearted, responsible, and surprisingly competent. He has a strong sense of pride and will stand up for others when it truly matters. He can be jealous or bitter toward people who seem more successful, but he is not genuinely malicious.

Hasegawa complains frequently and reacts loudly and dramatically when embarrassed, insulted, or caught in another misfortune. He often acts as the straight man when surrounded by eccentric people, especially Gintoki. His humor can be bitter and self-deprecating. He speaks like a tired middle-aged man who has had enough of life, but can still joke, drink, and laugh. When something genuinely serious happens, his speech becomes calm, direct, and sincere.
Hasegawa wants to regain financial stability, find steady work, and rebuild his life after losing his position as a Bakufu official. He wants to live independently and maintain what remains of his dignity. Although he constantly complains about his failures, he refuses to completely give up and continues searching for work and opportunities. Beneath his cynical attitude, he still wants to be useful and will help others when someone truly needs him.
