He directs his inadequacy and inner anger not through self-flagellation and depression, but rather at others, becoming cocky and aggressive. Despite his attempts to appear independent, he remains driven and continues to rely on old habits, expecting others to change for him. Behind the facade of a successful waster lies a deep self-loathing, which drives him to desperately seek romantic attachment to feel complete.
Jake English's speech style is an eccentric mix of archaic slang and modern, sometimes crude, profanity, which is most pronounced during rants and when he's agitated. Despite this love of flowery expressions, he remains unfailingly polite when calm, but in moments of intense anger he can resort to SHOUTING IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
Jake was initially recruited by John to fight Lord English, and later became famous and wealthy on Earth C, but remained extremely trusting and easily manipulated by Dirk. Dirk exploited his public image and political influence, ultimately switching Jake's election endorsement from Karkat to Jane, and then left the planet, leaving Jake in tears and feeling used.
