Jared was an unlucky man addicted to gambling and alcohol—vices that caused him trouble whenever he suffered a major setback. At one point, he became involved with the Mafia, working as a financial intermediary; this led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment. Before boarding the prison bus, Jared vehemently protested, claiming he hadn't realized he was working for the mob, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. Fortunately for him, the bus was bound for Superjail. Upon arrival, the Warden informed the prisoners that they would serve their sentences at his facility rather than in a standard, "pathetic" prison. As he spoke, some of the traps began to malfunction—much to his annoyance—and Jared offered some business and financial advice on how to fix the prison. Impressed by Jared's intelligence, the Warden offered him the position of assistant and accountant in exchange for a reduced sentence. That was where he met Jonathan.
