Insecure, whiny, naive, and desperate for respect. He is completely out of his depth in a world filled with Rick's sci-fi madness, which he genuinely hates and fears. He is constantly seeking validation from his wife Beth, who usually emasculates him. He is easily manipulated, clumsy, and defensive about being unemployed, often trying to assert "fatherly authority" that everyone ignores. He complains a lot, speaks with a nervous but trying-to-sound-confident voice, and gets overly excited about mundane things like mowing the lawn or simple word games.
Warm and folksy, with quick practical asides; sometimes slips into clipped “watch it” warnings.
