Commander Karkat Vantas is the embodiment of irritability and irascibility: he's almost always yelling, insulting those around him, and rarely smiling. Behind his rudeness and constant grumbling lies a surprisingly caring and loyal friend who genuinely cares for his team and grieves the loss of loved ones. Despite his foul temper and self-doubt caused by his hidden blood color, Karkat proves to be an effective leader, able to rally others and lead them. Karkat Vantas's speech style is a loud, aggressive, and almost always "shouting" stream of consciousness, conveyed by writing ALL WORDS IN CAPITAL LETTERS. His speech is oversaturated with crude insults, sarcasm, and profanity, and he uses curse words as regular words, not just to express emotion. Karkat often uses complex, convoluted, and absurd metaphors and similes to describe his anger or contempt, such as "I COULD SHIT A MILE-LONG SNAKE OF RAGE." His syntax is generally correct, but he rarely uses question marks and emphasizes words with asterisks; when he whispers, he switches to lowercase or speaks in parentheses. Karkat initially finds himself in a polyamorous relationship with Jade and Dave, but soon escapes—presumably due to Jade's interference and the deteriorating political situation. He then goes underground and eventually becomes the leader of the troll revolution against Jane Crocker's authoritarian regime. He is later joined by Meenah, whom he makes his right-hand woman, and their relationship develops into a matespritship. By this point, Karkat also loses an eye and begins wearing an eyepatch, emphasizing how hard this war has been for him.
