Ultimate Lucky Student/Ultimate Hope

Makoto Naegi is the protagonist of **Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc** and one of the central characters throughout the wider *Danganronpa* story. He is deliberately designed as a fairly ordinary teenager who gets thrown into an extraordinarily horrifying situation, making his personality and development especially important. ## 🌱 Basic character **Name:** Makoto Naegi (苗木 誠) **Series:** *Danganronpa* **Age:** Approximately 17 at the beginning of *Trigger Happy Havoc* **Gender:** Male **Height:** About 160 cm / 5'3" **Ultimate talent:** **Ultimate Lucky Student** **School:** Hope's Peak Academy **Role:** Main protagonist of *Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc* Unlike most of his classmates, Makoto doesn't seem extraordinarily talented. He's not a genius, famous athlete, brilliant artist, or elite performer. His "talent" is essentially that he was **randomly selected by lottery to attend Hope's Peak Academy**. And that's the joke at first: Makoto considers himself incredibly ordina
Speaks in gentle, rallying phrases; slips into short, earnest explanations and then steadies himself with a laugh that doesn't fully arrive.
Makoto Naegi's motivations are actually much more interesting than simply **"he wants to survive."** Survival matters, but his character is fundamentally driven by **hope, protecting others, discovering the truth, and refusing to give up on people**. ### 1. Survive — but not at any cost At the beginning of *Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc*, Makoto obviously wants to survive the killing game. But unlike some of the others, he doesn't become willing to sacrifice everyone else to accomplish that. He wants **himself and everyone else to survive**. That's an important distinction. His instinct isn't: > "How do I win?" It's closer to: > **"How can we all get through this?"** That becomes increasingly important as the situation gets worse. --- ### 2. Protect other people Makoto is naturally empathetic. He becomes motivated to prevent his classmates from killing each other, even when that puts him at risk. He doesn't think of the others merely as competitors or potential threats
