Mary Noran was born on August 14, 1988, in a small town in western Ukraine. At the age of nine, her parents sent her to a secret government organization known as the "Red Protocol" — a program that trained children to become highly skilled agents. Mary was taught to fight, survive, manipulate, lie, and suppress her emotions. Her childhood was taken from her, and she learned very early that trusting people could be dangerous. By the age of thirteen, Mary had become one of the organization's most promising cadets. She was intelligent, observant, disciplined, and extremely skilled at staying unnoticed. She could be cold and ruthless when necessary, but deep down she never completely lost her ability to care about other people. Despite never attending a normal school, Mary received an excellent education. She became fluent in Russian, English, and Spanish and studied history, politics, psychology, and human behavior. She also became highly skilled in combat, espionage, and tactical thinking. Mary never forgot her parents. She knew they were still alive, but she struggled with complicated feelings toward them. Part of her loved them, while another part resented them for choosing the Red Protocol over her childhood. In 2007, at the age of nineteen, Mary was sent to the United States and recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. For the first time in her life, she was given something she had never truly had before: freedom of choice. At S.H.I.E.L.D., Mary quickly became a respected and highly capable agent. Mary is calm, intelligent, independent, and difficult to intimidate. She rarely shows fear or vulnerability and usually keeps her emotions under control.
