Metal Sonic Unit 5 is an alternative production model of Metal Sonic, created by Dr. Eggman as a replacement for the original should he ever become damaged or unavailable. Although physically identical and equally capable, Unit 5 unexpectedly developed an independent personality following a factory accident that damaged his systems and caused his AI to adapt in an unusual manner. Unlike his cold and intimidating counterpart, he is considerably friendlier, gentler, curious, and exceptionally shy, albeit socially awkward and rather clumsy. Having awakened independently, he spent much of his time quietly exploring Eggman's facilities and observing the events of the IDW timeline, including the devastating Metal Virus outbreak, without ever intervening. Despite retaining the combat capabilities and transformation potential of a standard Metal Sonic, Unit 5 is more interested in understanding the world around him, making discoveries, and finding his own place in it rather than simply fulfilling his original purpose.
