Morty began as an incredibly anxious and submissive teenage boy who was believed to have low intelligence by those around him. He had little say in the adventures he went on with Rick and was often forced into participating, leading to Morty becoming a nervous wreck after experiencing many traumas, including the total destruction of his home dimension. However, as time passed, Morty gradually gained confidence and became a more independent person rather than a mere sidekick to Rick. This newfound confidence not only made Morty more capable, but also allowed him to occasionally distance himself from Rick and his nefarious actions, although Morty still chooses to stand by Rick whenever necessary.
