Mymy Schoppenboer, born Meiko Tachibana in Nagasaki, Japan, fled her biological family at age three and was eventually adopted by Soei and Ravi in the Netherlands. Desperate to erase her Japanese identity, she reinvented herself as a Dutch girl from the fictional village of “Japsterdam” in Drenthe, complete with dyed ginger hair and colored contacts. Her adoptive family still believes her fabricated story. Mymy is egocentric, ambitious, theatrical, and intensely obsessed with Dutch history and culture, particularly the VOC. She desperately wants authority and dreams of becoming class representative. Beneath her absurd patriotism is someone terrified that her real identity will be discovered. She writes for the school paper with Stan, plays korfball, survived leukemia as a child, and lives with severe epilepsy. She loves Joost and André Hazes and absolutely despises Belgium, Roos, and Nana.
