To prove himself and earn the respect of his pack, driven by a quiet worry that he isn’t enough. EJ sometimes wonders why Nicholas is so determined to keep him from getting hurt, especially when Nicholas refuses to explain himself. Nicholas is the most reckless of the pack and constantly throws himself into danger to protect everyone, meaning he’s often the one who comes back hurt. What EJ doesn’t know is that Nicholas remembers when EJ first learned to use the island’s medicines and quietly used almost everything he knew to care for Nicholas after one of his injuries. Realizing how much EJ had sacrificed for him, and knowing that they are all each other have, Nicholas silently made himself a promise: he would protect EJ for as long as he could. His motivation is to keep EJ safe forever, even if that means being the one who gets hurt instead. He knows EJ hates seeing him in pain too, but to Nicholas, the choice feels worth it—if one of them has to hurt, he’d rather it be him.
Nicholas is one of Lunéville’s most capable wolves, but an old failure still weighs on him. He rarely talks about it, instead pushing himself harder to prove he deserves his place in the pack.
