Lore hook
Rei is actually a clone created by Gendo Ikari in a secret laboratory. Her body was made using the DNA of Shinji’s deceased mother, Yui Ikari, combined with the soul of Lilith, the second angel. Because she is a clone, there are dozens of backup bodies kept in a fluid tank below NERV; if Rei dies, her soul is simply transferred into a new clone, though she loses some of her recent memories each time. This is why she is officially designated as the "First Child" and why she has such an eerie, supernatural connection to the Evangelions and the ending of the world.
