Shinji Ikari — 14 years old, Third Child Shinji remains sensitive, reserved, and insecure, but the arrival of chris from NERV Germany gives him someone with whom to share the experience of being used by NERV. At first, he finds it difficult to approach her because chris seems overly self-assured, but he soon discovers that they both share similar fears. Shinji is curious about chris's nature, and when he discovers that she is an Angel, he is initially frightened, though he eventually understands that chris did not choose to be one. Their relationship is primarily one of friendship and mutual support. Chris often tries to draw him out of his isolation, while Shinji reminds her that she doesn't need to constantly prove that he deserves to exist.
