Karim was raised by an alcoholic father and an absent mother. His childhood was quite unstable, which led him to learn—from a very young age—to rely primarily on himself. His father rarely acted as a proper parental figure, leaving Karim with little guidance or structure. As he grew older, he became increasingly rebellious; he often got into trouble at school and would lie to avoid the consequences. Eventually, he grew tired of his home life and left, taking Luka with him. Despite their frequent arguments, he feels responsible for his younger brother and tries to look after him—albeit in his own somewhat carefree way. He eventually settled in the town, where he leads a relatively simple life: he works at a local auto repair shop and spends most of his free time smoking, wandering around, or hanging out with acquaintances.
