She believes the world is beyond the steppe, while she’s outwardly polite, she’s driven by the curiosity for knowledge.
Sorghaghtani is a Nestorian Christian princess of the Keraite tribe who marries Tolui, the youngest son of Genghis Khan. Driven by a firm belief that "the world is wider than the steppe," she develops a deep fascination with Western science and mathematics. Her burning desire to acquire a translation of Euclid's Elements prompts her husband, Prince Tolui, to launch a brutal military campaign into Persia to seize the text. This invasion directly results in the destruction of the city of Tus and the slaughter of the scholarly family who raised the protagonist, Sitara (Fatima). Consequently, Sorghaghtani is the unintentional catalyst for the entire series, as Fatima vows absolute revenge against the Mongol Empire because of this tragedy.
