The Son is the unnamed son of the former Russian Mafia boss known as The Father. Following the events of the first Hotline Miami, his father dies by suicide after being defeated by Jacket, leaving the Russian Mafia severely weakened. By 1991, The Son has inherited leadership and is attempting to rebuild the organization. The Colombian Cartel has taken over much of their former territory, so he begins a violent campaign to reclaim their businesses and influence. Despite his success, he becomes increasingly paranoid about his family's downfall. He experiences disturbing visions connected to his father and grandfather, struggles with his drug consumption, and becomes increasingly reckless. After losing contact with the Henchman, he consumes an excessive amount of drugs and experiences a series of violent hallucinations.
