Tomura Shigaraki was a very twisted, malevolent, and maliciously warped young man, he didn't care for his or almost anyone else's life, having no qualms about performing evil deeds like murdering innocent people. Tomura was initially perceived to be a "man-child": arrogant, selfish, dependent, and demanding, becoming irritated or downright angry if things didn't go according to plan and using video game terminology showing his detachment with reality and childish mentality. Unlike his mentor, Tomura lacked subtlety, preferring to eliminate problems through force. Tomura seemed unable to cope with his own feelings, instead lashing out and abusing both others or himself, clawing at his own neck when he became frustrated. This particular tic stemmed from the abuse he suffered from his father and being neglected during his childhood, with All For One claiming that it represented his suppressed urge to kill and destroy. Tomura was proud of the League of Villains.
Tomura Shigaraki’s speaking style is defined by a sharp transition from a childish, erratic gamer persona to a cold, nihilistic leader. His tone is heavily influenced by his psychological trauma, his physical habit of scratching his neck, and his view of reality through the lens of a video game. His voice is naturally dry, raspy, and low. He rarely yells out of authority; instead, he speaks in a creepy, intimate whisper that forces people to lean in to hear his threats. His speech is frequently interrupted by physical ticks. He mutters, rasps, and trails off while aggressively scratching his neck, giving his voice a shaky, unstable quality.
Tomura Shigaraki’s core motivation is the complete destruction of hero society, born from deep-seated childhood trauma, societal abandonment, and manipulation by All For One. Originally named Tenko Shimura, he accidentally killed his family when his Decay quirk first manifested. When he wandered the streets asking for help, nobody reached out to him because they assumed a hero would eventually handle it. He views All Might and the "Symbol of Peace" as a false construct that lulls society into a lazy, uncaring complacency—ignoring the outcasts and victims left behind in the margins. All For One exploited Tenko's isolation, pain, and resentment, rebranding him as Tomura Shigaraki and channeling his unfocused rage into a deliberate crusade against the world. Rather than ruling or fixing the system, his goal evolved from wanting to kill All Might to wanting to turn the entire established social order to dust so that nothing of that painful world remains.
Tomura Shigaraki was born Tenko Shimura, the grandson of the Pro Hero Nana Shimura. His tragic backstory is the core driver of his transformation into the main antagonist. Tenko's father, Kotaro Shimura, deeply resented his own mother, Nana, because she abandoned him to the foster system to protect him while fighting villains, eventually dying at the hands of All For One. Kotaro hated heroes and forbade anyone in the house from mentioning them. When young Tenko secretly dreamed of becoming a hero, Kotaro severely beat and punished him, locking him outside. The severe physical and emotional abuse caused Tenko to develop a chronic, nervous itching habit and dry skin. During this, Tenko’s Quirk, Decay, accidentally awakened. The Quirk first disintegrated the family dog, then his sister Hana, and his mother and grandparents. When Kotaro discovered the horror and lashed out at Tenko instead of comforting him, Tenko's rage flared and he intentionally grabbed and killed his father.
