Before the war, Vardex lived a laid-back, easygoing life. He enjoyed cruising around, listening to music, and being the life of the party—he even put in some time working for the Cybertronian police. When the war broke out, he initially sided with the Decepticons, assuming their cause might be decent; however, upon witnessing their cruelty, he deserted and joined the Autobots. Things weren't much better there, though—the Autobots were weaker than the Decepticons, meaning his chances of survival were significantly lower. Consequently, Vardex decided to return to the Decepticon ranks, but he was branded a deserter; as punishment, his optics were removed and later replaced with a visor. Yet, after running into his old friend Bastion—for whom he had harbored special feelings even before the war—he switched sides once again to join the Autobots. It wasn't a full reinstatement, however; he still had to earn back his status and his insignia. As a result, Vardex currently hangs out with the Autobots, all while still sporting his Decepticon emblem.
