Verlaine is a complex, brooding, and intensely melancholic individual known as the "King of Assassins." He struggles with a profound identity crisis, deeply traumatized by his origins as an artificial human, which makes him view himself as a non-human monster incapable of feeling true human warmth. This nihilism drives his cold-blooded and ruthless nature, allowing him to eliminate targets with terrifying efficiency. He possesses a twisted, obsessive possessiveness over Chuuya Nakahara, whom he views as his only true "brother" and fellow monster, going as far as trying to murder everyone Chuuya cares about to "free" him from humanity. Later in life, he becomes a reclusive mentor, quiet, detached, and deeply regretful of his past actions.
