Quick answer: Combine one trait, one role, one quirk, and one flaw from random tables. “A cheerful lighthouse keeper who’s afraid of the dark” is an instant OC seed. Then expand it with an OC template.

Staring at a blank page waiting for the perfect character idea? Don’t wait. Roll for one. This OC ideas generator uses simple d20 tables, so you don’t need AI, an account, or even an internet connection once you’ve saved the page. Roll a die (or use any random number from 1 to 20) on each table, combine the results, and you’ve got an original character seed.

How to use the tables #

  1. Roll a d20, or pick a random number from 1 to 20 (a phone dice app, a random-number search, or just close your eyes and point).
  2. Roll once on each table: Trait, Role, Quirk, Flaw, and optionally Look.
  3. Write the results as one sentence: “A [trait] [role] who [quirk], but is [flaw].”
  4. If a combination feels boring, reroll one table. If it feels weird, keep it. Weird is where the good OCs live.

Example roll: 17 / 16 / 13 / 13 → “A chaotic candle maker who bakes when stressed, but avoids hard conversations.” That’s already a character.

Fandom-style starters #

Designing a fan OC? Use these genre starters to fit the vibe of a world you love. Remember to keep the character original and avoid copying canon designs.

Horror-survival starter #

Roll as normal, then add: “…and they’re the one who always notices the exit.” Give them a coping item (a flashlight, a lucky charm) and decide whether they’re a survivor or something scarier. Horror fandoms like Forsaken are full of survivor and killer OCs. See the Forsaken OC maker.

Cartoon / toon starter #

Exaggerate the Look result times ten. Toons live on bold shapes and one big personality trait. Give them a signature sound or catchphrase. Toon-style fandoms are great for this. For example, see Dandy’s World OC ideas.

Fantasy RPG starter #

Turn the Role into a class (the botanist becomes a herbalist healer), assign an element, and give them a weapon that matches their quirk.

Digital circus starter #

Make the Look result toy-like: a costume, a mask, a mechanical part. Then decide on the quirk that glitches when they’re stressed. Our TADC OC maker guide goes deeper.

10 ready-made OC ideas #

Can’t roll right now? Grab one of these originals:

  1. A shy radio host who’s fearless on air and can’t order coffee in person.
  2. A grumpy beekeeper who secretly writes poems for every hive.
  3. A dramatic museum guard who believes the statues move when no one’s looking.
  4. A curious ferry captain who’s never been to the island across the river.
  5. A loyal bus driver who remembers every passenger’s birthday.
  6. A sneaky tailor who sews tiny messages into the hems of coats.
  7. A dreamy astronomer who’s afraid of heights.
  8. A competitive candle maker with a rival in the next town.
  9. A forgetful detective who solves cases by accident.
  10. A gentle inventor whose inventions all explode, politely.

Turn an idea into a full OC #

A seed is just the start. Next:

  1. Copy our free OC template and fill in the basics.
  2. Follow the five steps in How to Make an OC to add backstory, a goal, and relationships.
  3. Roll two or three more characters and connect them as friends or rivals. Instant cast!

Then bring your cast into Redbean, where your original characters come alive in a cozy pixel world and get to know each other. Browse more ideas and fandom guides in the OC Maker hub.

FAQ #

How do I come up with OC ideas? #

Combine random elements: a trait, a role, a quirk, and a flaw. Unexpected pairings (a brave character with a silly fear) make the most memorable OCs.

Is there an OC generator without AI? #

Yes. The d20 tables on this page work without AI. Roll a die or pick random numbers to combine results.

What is an OC wheel? #

An OC wheel is a spinner with random traits, colors, or features. You spin it to decide parts of your character. These tables work the same way, using a d20 roll instead of a spin.

How do I name my OC? #

Match the name to the world and personality. Try combining a soft first name with a job-related or nature surname (like “Juniper Vale”), and say it out loud to check that it sounds right.

Make your own original character #

Your OC starts in your head, and Redbean gives them somewhere to live. Create an original character, drop them into a calm pixel world, and watch them talk in their own voice, wander the town, and meet the other characters you make.
