AI Roleplay Alternative: Where to Take Your Characters After Character.AI’s Bankruptcy

Last checked: October 21, 2026. Character.AI’s sale process is ongoing, and we’ll update this page as confirmed news comes in.
If you’ve spent months or years building characters on Character.AI, the news from October 2026 probably made your stomach drop. The company behind the platform filed for bankruptcy. Your feeds are full of rumors, screenshots, and “it’s over” posts.
Take a breath. Character.AI has not shut down. But its future is uncertain, and this is a good moment to think about where your original characters should live next. This page is the starting point. It covers what’s actually confirmed, what to do first, what to look for in an AI roleplay alternative, and where to go for deeper guides.
What happened to Character.AI (the confirmed facts) #
On October 12, 2026, Character Technologies Inc., the company behind Character.AI, began a voluntary Chapter 11 case in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The goal is a court-supervised sale of “all or substantially all” of the company’s assets (Character.AI blog; BusinessWire press release).
Before filing, the company agreed to let Disney act as a “stalking horse” bidder. That’s an opening offer other buyers can beat. Disney’s bid is $20 million for a non-exclusive perpetual license to certain intellectual property and claims, plus transition services (BusinessWire; NBC News/Reuters).
In court filings, the company said the platform had become “costly to develop and grow,” and that these costs, along with potential litigation and regulatory pressure, left it unable to support the business in its current form (CNBC).
Is Character.AI shut down? #
No. As of this writing, the company says the platform “remains up and running” and you can still use all services (Character.AI blog). It has also said plainly that if the sale doesn’t produce a buyer who keeps the platform going, “the platform will be wound down.” For a full explainer, read Is Character.AI Shutting Down?.
Timeline at a glance #
- October 12, 2026: Chapter 11 filed; Disney named as stalking-horse bidder.
- October 15, 2026: Notice of Commencement filed (a routine court notice, not a shutdown).
- Late November or early December 2026: expected completion of the sale process, according to the company.
- After the sale: either the platform continues under a buyer, or it is wound down.
First step: save your characters and chats #
Whatever happens next, the safest move is the boring one: back up. Character.AI says you can “export your data through the app or the Character.ai website” (Character.AI blog). Do it now while everything works.
Exporting isn’t the whole job, though. What makes a character feel like yours is the details: their greeting, how they talk, their history, the people in their life. Write those down in a document you control. Our step-by-step guide walks you through both parts: How to Export Your Character.AI Chats and Characters.
What to look for in a Character.AI alternative #
There are plenty of AI chat apps. Few are a good home for an original character you care about. Here’s what we’d look for.
You own your original characters #
Your character’s name, personality, and story came from you. A good alternative lets you rebuild them fully. That means a name, a look, a voice, a backstory, and relationships. You shouldn’t have to squeeze them into someone else’s template. It should also be built around original characters, not borrowed ones.
Calm, not compulsive #
Many roleplay apps are designed as endless chat feeds, where the next message is always one tap away. Some creators love that. Many others want something slower, where their characters exist in a world, do things on their own, and are there when you come back. Ask yourself whether an app leaves you feeling refreshed or drained.
Teen-safe by design #
Character.AI removed open-ended chat for users under 18 in November 2025 (Character.AI). Many younger creators are looking for a place that was designed with them in mind from the start. Check age ratings, content filters, and reporting tools. Our guide covers it in detail: Is Character.AI Safe for Teens?.
Personas and whole casts #
If you loved playing as a persona, or running scenes with several of your characters at once, look for an app that supports a cast rather than one bot at a time. More on that in Character AI Alternative With Personas.
Chat apps vs. living worlds: two kinds of alternatives #
Broadly, AI roleplay alternatives fall into two groups:
- Chat-first apps. You talk one-on-one with a character in a message thread. They’re familiar and fast.
- World-first games. Your characters live in a shared space, talk to each other, and keep going between visits.
Neither is wrong. They’re just different. If you want to compare the options side by side, our roundup of AI roleplay games with characters breaks down the main apps.

Rebuild your character, even better than before #
Moving apps is also a chance to revisit a character. Maybe their voice drifted over hundreds of chats. Maybe you never wrote down their flaws. Starting fresh with a clear character sheet often brings a character back sharper than before. Our free template shows you how: How to Write an AI Character.
Why Redbean is built for this moment #
Redbean is a calm pixel world for original characters. You create a character, and they come alive in the world. They talk in their own voice, go about their day, and meet the other characters you make. It’s meant to feel like visiting a small town you built, not scrolling an inbox. If you’re looking for somewhere quieter to bring the characters you love, it’s worth a look.
