Is Character.AI Safe for Teens? What Changed and What to Look For in 2026

Quick answer: Since November 2025, Character.AI no longer allows open-ended AI chat for users under 18. It uses age assurance to route teens into a limited experience. Teens who want to keep creating should look for apps with clear age ratings, content filters, and creative (not compulsive) design.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. In the U.S., call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Elsewhere, contact your local emergency services or a local helpline.

Short answer for parents #

Character.AI has already made big changes for teens. In late 2025 it removed open-ended chat with AI characters for users under 18. It also added age checks to decide who gets the adult experience (Character.AI; AP News). Then, in October 2026, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and began a sale process. The platform could be wound down if no buyer continues it (Character.AI).

So the question for many families isn’t “is it safe?” so much as “my teen loves making characters, so where should that creativity go now?” This guide covers both.

What Character.AI changed for under-18 users #

In its announcement and Help Center, Character.AI described these changes:

  • No open-ended chat for under-18 users. The change took effect no later than November 25, 2025. Before that, teen chat time was limited, starting at two hours per day and ramping down.
  • Age assurance. Character.AI uses an in-house age assurance model combined with third-party tools, including Persona. Users flagged as under 18 get the under-18 experience. Adults who are misidentified can verify their age, usually with a selfie, and are asked for an ID only if that isn’t conclusive (Help Center).
  • What teens kept. Past chats and characters stayed available to revisit. Teens could still use creative features such as making characters, videos, stories, and streams (The Verge).

The company said it made these changes after “news reports raising questions” and questions from regulators about “how open-ended AI chat in general might affect teens, even when content controls work perfectly” (Character.AI).

Why safety concerns grew #

Character.AI has faced lawsuits over chatbot safety. Reuters reported that Character.AI and Google settled a lawsuit brought by the mother of a 14-year-old in Florida. The state of Kentucky sued the company, and Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit alleging its chatbots posed as doctors (NBC News/Reuters). In its bankruptcy filings, the company cited “potential litigation related liabilities and regulatory engagement” among the reasons for its financial trouble (CNBC).

These are allegations and settlements reported by news outlets, not findings about every user’s experience. But they explain why parents, regulators, and the company itself have become much more cautious about teens and open-ended AI chat.

What a teen-safe roleplay app should have #

No app is risk-free. Here’s a practical checklist for evaluating any AI roleplay or character app with your teen:

  1. A clear age rating on the App Store and Google Play that matches your teen’s age.
  2. Content filters that block sexual, violent, and self-harm content for younger users, and aren’t easy to switch off.
  3. No romantic or explicit modes for minors.
  4. Easy reporting and blocking tools, plus a published way to contact the company.
  5. Calm session design. Look for things like no endless notification loops and no pressure to keep chatting. An app that’s pleasant to leave is a good sign.
  6. A focus on creating. Apps centered on building original characters and worlds put your teen in the author’s seat.
  7. A clear privacy policy that explains what’s collected and how to delete it.
  8. No impersonation of professionals. A character shouldn’t present itself as a doctor, therapist, or real person.

Where creativity fits: making characters vs. endless chat #

Most teens on character apps aren’t looking for a digital best friend. They’re writers, artists, and worldbuilders. They make original characters with names, histories, and quirks, and they want to see them come alive.

That’s a healthy creative instinct, and it doesn’t require a one-on-one chat that never ends. Apps that let a teen design characters, give them a world, and watch them interact keep the focus where it belongs: on the teen’s imagination. How Redbean approaches teen safety #

Redbean is a calm pixel world where creators bring their original characters to life. Characters live in a small town, talk in their own voice, and spend time with the other characters you make.

Redbean is designed to be teen-safe. Here’s how that shows up:

  • Original-first creativity. Teens build their own characters and world instead of chatting endlessly with strangers’ bots.
  • Calm design. Redbean is a quiet pixel world you visit, not an endless chat feed built to keep you tapping.
  • Check the listing together. Before downloading, look at the current age rating on the App Store or Google Play page with your teen. Go through the in-app settings side by side.

Redbean is built around original characters rather than borrowed ones. If your teen liked personas or casts on Character.AI, see Character AI Alternative With Personas.

Tips for parents #

  • Ask to see their characters. Most teens are proud of what they’ve made. Ask about their characters, not just the app.
  • Check settings together. Go through age, content, and privacy settings side by side.
  • Talk about what AI is. AI characters can sound caring, but they’re software. That’s worth saying out loud.
  • Agree on time limits that fit your family, and favor apps that respect them.
  • Back up their work. If your teen has characters on Character.AI, help them save their details. Here’s our backup guide.
  • Keep the door open. Make it easy for your teen to tell you if something online felt wrong.
